The severe restrictions associated with the strict lockdown of the city of Shanghai for more than two months severely slowed down the production of local industries and the flow of goods. It is estimated that Chinese production decreased by about 15% during this period. This decrease was directly felt in the air activity. Compared to the same period in 2021, the activity of Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) dropped by 66.4% in the first two weeks of April. Maritime activity dropped by 40% during the lockdown period. It is therefore expected that the reduction of restrictions on June 1, 2022 will contribute to a strong recovery of activity and a significant lack of capacity.
Shanghai's unlockdown facilitates a strong resumption of airfreight activity
After many weeks of not being able to move goods at a normal speed, the backlog is growing steadily, which should be accentuated by a full recovery of the factories in the Shanghai area. Airfreight is therefore the obvious solution for getting goods stuck in China to your end consumer as quickly as possible. However, this return to normal may be limited by a lack of capacity and higher prices.
